“That’s a lie!” Virginia vaulted off the bed. “How could she!”

Annie wondered the same thing but for a different reason—was it true? Either way, broadcasting a claim like that would only inflame the situation and make the search more difficult— junk leads would pour in.

Virginia seethed. “She never liked Josh. I don’t know why.” She clicked off the TV and tossed the remote on a chair. “And Larry was even worse. He was openly hostile to my son.”

“How do you know that?”

“Josh has told me stories for years. He never felt welcome in their home.”

“What do you mean by openly hostile?”

“Refused to talk to him, ignored him when he was in the room. Criticized him in front of the family.”

“I see.”

Alarm washed some of the anger off Virginia’s face. “Wait. Why are you here?”

“I’m afraid I have some bad news.”

“Is Josh dead?”

“No, ma’am. It’s Kelly.”

Virginia dropped back onto the bed and seemed to grow even smaller in the robe. “Oh, no. She’s dead?”

“Yes.”

Tears rolled down her face. “Poor girl. She was so sweet. Where did you find her?”

“She was in the East Gallatin River.”

“And Josh?”

“No sign of him.”

She wiped at her cheeks. “I suppose I should be relieved, but the public will crucify him now.”

“Do you know where I might find Josh?”

She shrugged. “I don’t. I wish I did.”

“If you hear from him, please call me immediately.”

“Of course.”

Annie started for the door.

“Detective!”

She stopped. “Ma’am?”

“My husband passed several years ago, and Josh is all I have left. He didn’t do this. He loved Kelly with his whole heart.”

“I hope you’re right, ma’am.”

“I know I am. Please find him.”

Annie met the grieving mother’s gaze. “You have my word.”

“Thank you.”

Annie closed the hotel room door behind her.
